For all the bashing back and forth from so-called "fanboys" towards their rivalling console, it just occured to me as to why the PS3 will come out on top. Or rather, will finish before Microsoft's hardware. We'll not take Wii into account here.
It is as easy as can be: with most publishers preferring dual-format simultaneous development in order to maximize revenue, a lot can be said about the quality of exclusives. True, in the long run, these will be an influencing factor as to which purchase to make. While currently, many many people are looking at what is available now, I guess it is pretty safe to say that eventually BOTH consoles will have a good amount of great exclusives. Yes, MS is leading and Sony trailing, but that will no doubt level out.
At that moment, when both consoles have a good amount of great exclusives, it will not be the decisive factor anymore. Hardware will. With prices having come down by that time, consumers will look at what offers me most. Sony's expensive machine - which will be affordable, yet still more costly than 360, or Microsoft's. With Sony giving so much more out of the box, I think consumers will easily decide on it. MS, because of early-adopter compatibility issues, can not follow suit and will start loosing heavily. The sales trend will eventually be reversed: Sony outselling MS.
One question I can not answer easily, is what will happen in North America. How the cards will have been dealt there. MS's amazing headstart, even though their initial hardware was ill-engineered, could be a bridge too far for Sony to tackle. Worldwide though, Sony'll win it. Not by as far as margin as it did previously though. But it will win it.
